When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
“When I grow up, I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies.” Well that’s how the song goes anyway. But for the FFW #WonderWomen, they had a much different idea of what they wanted to be when they got older…
“A veterinarian or ballerina.” – Melissa
“An oceanographer or a journalist. I achieved the second one!” – Marsha
“World-champion bicycle rider.” – Lisa
“I thought cash registers were super cool when I was a kid and always wanted to have one, that was until I had to use one at my first job.” – Jacy
“For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a writer and a journalist. Here I am in 10th grade for school photos. I used to tell people no one would take me seriously as a writer unless I wore a tie.” – Dani
“A marine biologist. I even became a certified SCUBA diver when I was 15 years old and went to Sea Camp for two weeks in the Florida Keys.” – Adrienne
(Adrienne at age 15 in the Florida Keys)
“A veterinarian. I still want to be a veterinarian and take care of all the pets of FFW!” – Susie
“A teacher or a writer.” – Amy
“First I wanted more than anything to be just like Mia Hamm, but then reality set in and I switched to wanting to be a sports agent instead. Shocking, I know.” – Katie
“I wanted to be a lot of things when I was growing up, but a couple of professions that stood out include an astronomer and a flight attendant for Hawaiian Airlines.” – Cherryl
So maybe the song should go more like… “When I grow up, I wanna be a journalist, I wanna be a vet, I wanna work in the airline industry?” At least, that can be the FFW version.
It’s crazy to think about all of the various paths that led each of us to where we are. We’re grateful all of these women made their way to FFW, making it the incredible organization it is today.
