Las Vegas surgeon forms non-profit; announces Charity Surgery Day
Seeks qualified patients to receive surgery at no cost
Dr. Kevin Petersen, founder of No Insurance Surgery (NIS), a Las Vegas-based surgical practice that provides medically necessary surgeries on a discounted cash-only basis to a segment of the uninsured and underinsured, announces the formation of Helping Hands Surgical Care (HHSC). HHSC is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to fund and facilitate surgeries for uninsured individuals without the means to pay for medically necessary elective surgeries.
HHSC is seeking patients who may qualify to receive medically necessary surgery at no cost on the organization’s inaugural Charity Surgery Day scheduled for November 15, 2011. HHSC expects to perform from 7 to 10 charity surgeries that day and will screen applicants via an advisory panel comprised of medical professionals.
Qualified patients must have a stable, chronic, non-emergency condition that requires surgery to restore a disabled patient to normal function or to remove a potentially life threatening condition, such as hernia repair, gall bladder removal, select gynecological surgeries, select back surgeries and cataract removal. Candidates must reside in Nevada, lack medical insurance and the resources to pay for surgery. They must also be acceptable surgical candidates. HHSC is an outgrowth of No Insurance Surgery which Petersen founded in 2006. Through his practice, Petersen recognized the growing numbers of individuals in dire need of surgery but who have no way to pay for surgery.
“Helping Hands Surgical Care brings together many from the local medical community who will donate their time, their skills and their services to help those who need it most – patients who are in chronic pain,” said Petersen. “We are actively assembling surgeons and other health care professionals to join our cause so we can benefit as many individuals as possible.”
In addition to Petersen, who is a general surgeon, doctors committed to assisting and providing charity surgeries through HHSC include Allan Stahl, M.D., cardiology, Michael Verni, M.D., urology; Cameron Earl, M.D., plastic surgery; Jeannie Khavkin, M.D., otolaryngology and facial plastic surgery; Yevgeniy Khavkin, M.D., spine surgery; Ronette Cyka, M.D., gynecology; and George McMickle, M.D., ophthalmology and eye surgery. Medical District Surgery Center, where Dr. Petersen performs most of his no-insurance surgeries, is working with HHSC and has committed to donating the use of three operating rooms at their surgical facility on Charity Surgery Day.
“Helping Hands Surgical Care takes the idea of No Insurance Surgery to a new level to help those who have absolutely no options,” he said. “We value the health and well-being of each individual regardless of their ability to pay. We are guided by our focus on the physician-patient relationship and our dedication to transforming and improving the lives of those we serve.”
Petersen, who was board certified in 1986 and has performed more than 15,000 surgeries throughout his 25-year career, treats patients from throughout the US and Canada who travel to Las Vegas to receive surgery they can’t receive and afford in their home communities because of their lack of insurance. Through his No Insurance Surgery practice, Petersen has performed more than 900 surgeries on a discounted cash-only basis, and he recently opted out of the insurance system to no longer accept new patients with insurance.
