Helping Hands Surgical Care provides tenth and final free medically necessary surgery this summer to 50-year-old part-time worker

WHAT: An uninsured 50-year-old Southern Nevada man will receive free medically necessary surgery August 6 courtesy of Helping Hands Surgical Care (HHSC), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organizationfounded by Dr. Kevin Petersen. The surgery is the tenth and final planned free surgery this summer performed by Dr. Petersen, who waives his fee and receives no compensation for performing surgeries through HHSC.  The organization covers all other costs associated with surgery, including the medical facility fee.

To date, more than two dozen free surgeries have been performed through HHSC since its inaugural Charity Surgery Day on November 10, 2011, when 10 medically necessary surgeries were provided at no cost to qualifying patients on a single day.   Ten additional surgeries, whose costs were underwritten through funds raised at a successful HHSC fundraiser in May, were provided through HHSC throughout the summer. While this surgery is the last of those ten planned operations, a second annual Charity Surgery Day is planned for Nov. 13 on which multiple free surgeries will be performed in a single day.  HHSC will continue to provide free surgeries as funds are available to cover ancillary costs.

HHSC currently has more than 200 applications from uninsured Nevadans who do not qualify for government assistance and do not have the means to pay for surgery.  A medical advisory board screens the applications to select patients to receive no cost surgeries. HHSC’s mission is to fund and facilitate surgeries for uninsured and underinsured Nevadans to restore their health, help them return to work and regain hope.  HHSC is providing surgeries as funds are available to cover the costs of related services, including anesthesiology, medicine, nurses and operating room staff, lab and diagnostic services, etc.

About the patient: Rafael Ortiz, 50, will receive surgery on Monday, August 6 at at 1 p.m.; he arrives for surgery at noon.  Ortiz does not have a stable job and works only a few days a week  due to the pain he suffers from a hernia condition. He is very grateful to be selected to receive free surgery.

WHERE: Medical District Surgery Center, 2020 Goldring Ave. #300, Las Vegas, NV 89106
